Design Systems for Small Teams: Start With Five Components

When people hear “design system”, they picture a website full of documentation and a team that maintains it. Small teams look at that and decide it is not for them.
It is. You just need to start smaller than you think.
Begin with tokens
Colours, type sizes, spacing and radii. Write them down once, give them names, and use the names everywhere. This alone removes most of the inconsistency in a young product.
Then five components
- Button, with its states: default, hover, focus, disabled.
- Input, including error and helper text.
- Card, the container most screens are built from.
- Modal, because everyone builds a slightly different one.
- Navigation, so every page feels like the same product.
These five cover the majority of the screens I design for early-stage startups.
Keep it alive
A design system dies when it drifts away from the code. Review it together with a developer once a month, delete what nobody uses, and add only what has been needed twice.
Small, honest and in sync beats big and abandoned every time.
